About George Hearst
George Hearst was an American businessman, politician, and patriarch of the Hearst dynasty. After growing up on a small farm in Missouri, he established numerous mining companies. He is known for developing and expanding the Homestake mine in the late 1870s in the Black Hills of South Dakota. In 1879, he listed the mine on the New York Stock Exchange and continued with other ventures. The mine’s gold production continued uninterrupted until 2001.

In 1886, Hearst was appointed to the United States Senate to fill a vacancy and was later elected as a Democrat. He served in the Senate from 1887 until his death in 1891. His only child from his late marriage (at age 42) was his son William Randolph Hearst, who became internationally known as a newspaper magnate and publisher and was a major inspiration for Orson Welles’ 1941 film Citizen Kane.

About George Harrison
George Harrison was the prospector who discovered gold in the Witwatersrand region of South Africa, on the Langlaagte farm. The site of Harrison’s claim has since been transformed into George Harrison Park in Johannesburg. The Witwatersrand is a low mountain range that runs through the Gauteng province of South Africa. A statue of Harrison, created by Tienie Pritchard in 1988 and also known as “The Miner,” was commissioned to celebrate the centenary of Johannesburg. The statue is 4 meters high and is described as “one of the largest sculptures in South Africa.” It stands in Settlers Park, Eastgate.

The “Rand” (Afrikaans for “mountain range”) is famous because 40 percent of all the gold in the world comes from here. Many of the old mines are now closed, but gold mining continues in the area. Due to the mineral wealth in the Witwatersrand, the currency of South Africa is named after it (the Rand).
